Ours to Protect is a unique and exciting audio project – a collaboration of local and regional broadcasters from across the country who have come together to tackle climate change, champion climate action, and inform and educate audiences all over Ireland about how they can make a difference.

Today on ‘Ours To Protect’ John Morley talks to Galway podcasters Ciara Daly and Darragh Wynne of The Climate Alarm Clock after their show got nominated for a national award.

Why Climate Journalism is so important?

• Climate change is causing more frequent and intense natural disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, and droughts and understanding the link helps us prepare for and respond to these events, ensuring the safety and well-being of affected communities.
• Climate change disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, including marginalized communities, indigenous peoples, and low-income individuals and by understanding the link, we can advocate for equitable policies and support those most affected.
• Understanding the link between climate change and migration informs policy-making and urban planning and it helps governments and organisations develop strategies to mitigate the impact of climate change and create sustainable solutions for displaced populations.
• Addressing climate change and its impact on migration requires international collaboration and understanding the link helps foster cooperation between countries, organizations, and communities
• By understanding the link, we can integrate climate change considerations into development plans and this, in turn, promotes sustainable practices, such as renewable energy, conservation, and resilient infrastructure, reducing the need for migration due to climate-related factors.

What can I do to help support Climate Journalism and Podcasting?

• Tune in to climate podcasts and share them with your friends, family, and social media networks. By spreading the word, you help increase the reach and impact of climate journalism.
• Engage with climate journalists and podcasters by leaving reviews, comments, or sending them messages. Your feedback can help them improve their content and encourage them to continue their important work.
• Consider supporting climate journalism and podcasting through donations or subscriptions. Many independent journalists and podcasters rely on financial contributions to sustain their work and provide quality content.
•  Look out for climate journalism and podcasting events, such as panel discussions, webinars, or conferences. Participating in these events not only supports the creators but also allows you to learn and engage with experts in the field.
• Educate yourself about climate change and its impact on migration by following reputable news sources, reading books, and staying up-to-date with the latest research. Being well-informed enables you to have meaningful conversations and support climate journalism effectively.
